Royal Jelly
Royal jelly – the juice to feed queen bees – is a natural bee product that is collected from the combs by hand. In the food sector, it is either used in its pure form or as a dietary supplement. In the cosmetics industry, it is added to care products.
Origin
Royal jelly is a secretion from the glands in the hypopharynx of nurse bees (Apis mellifera), which is fed to bee larvae, queen larvae, and the queen of a bee colony. While nurse larvae only receive this juice for a few days, queen larvae are exclusively fed with royal jelly, triggering an enormous boost to their growth and development.
Applications
Food
Royal jelly is often used in food supplements because it is rich in nutrients and is composed of a variety of organic compounds e.g. proteins, amino acids & vitamins.
Cosmetics
The cosmetics industry relies on the anti-aging effect of the bee product (which it is said to have) - for example, it is used in skin care products and is said to help tighten the skin.
Pharma
The "bee superfood" finds application in pharmaceuticals, among other things.
